St. Armands Circle was the vision of circus magnate John Ringling, who purchased the island in 1917 and planned to develop it into a luxury resort with custom residences and a shopping center. He designed the circle layout inspired by his travels in Europe and used circus elephants to build the causeway that connected the island to the mainland. However, his dream was cut short by the Great Depression and the island remained undeveloped for decades until it was revived in the 1950. 

St. Armands Circle is home 99 shops, restaurants and galleries that offer a variety of products and services. You can find clothing, jewelry, art, souvenirs, books, antiques and more. Some of the popular stores include The Met Fashion House, Lilly Pulitzer, Tommy Bahama and The Spice & Tea Exchange. You can also enjoy a wide range of cuisines, from casual to fine dining, such as Shore, Café L’Europe, Columbia Restaurant and Kilwins Chocolates & Ice Cream. St. Armands Circle has plenty of parking options for visitors. You can park for free in the four quadrants around the circle or use the paid parking garage on North Adams Drive.
