Mall at 163rd Street is an open-air retail center with grocery, shopper-favored retailers, services and restaurants in Miami, Florida with over 56 stores. It is located at 1205 NE 163rd St, North Miami Beach, FL, 331621, near the intersection of NE 12th Avenue and NE 163rd Street. The mall is open from 6:00 am to 12:00 am every day. The mall has a long history dating back to 1956, when it opened as The 163rd Street Shopping Center, an open-air shopping center anchored by a Raymond Loewy-designed Burdines and later, Richard’s. It also featured other stores such as Food Fair, JCPenney, M and M Cafeteria, Walgreens, and Woolworth. In addition, it had a Wometco 163rd Street Theatre as an outparcel. In February 1971, Jordan Marsh opened a three-story location at the shopping center’s east wing. From 1980 to October 1982, the shopping center was converted into a climate-controlled enclosed mall. Colossal metal arches were flanked over the main plaza that the stores resided along, and a white, translucent, Teflon-coated fiberglass was placed over them. Richard’s, which closed in 1980 as part of a chain-wide closure, was fashioned into a three-floor atrium. The mall was renamed The Mall at 163rd Street and became one of the largest malls in South Florida at the time.
However, the mall declined in the 1990s due to competition from newer and larger malls such as Aventura Mall and The Mall at Millenia. Many of the original tenants left or closed down, leaving the mall with high vacancy rates and low foot traffic. In 1999, Burdines merged with Macy’s and closed its store at the mall. In 2001, Jordan Marsh also closed its store. In 2003, the mall was sold to Brixmor Property Group. The company decided to redevelop the mall as an open-air power center with big-box retailers and restaurants. The metal arches and fiberglass dome were removed and replaced with conventional roofs. The former Burdines space was demolished and replaced with a Wal-Mart Supercenter. The former Jordan Marsh space was subdivided into smaller spaces for Marshalls, Ross, and other tenants. The mall was renamed Mall at 163rd Street and reopened in 2006. The mall’s current anchors are The Home Depot, Marshalls, Ross, and Wal-Mart Supercenter. Some of the other tenants include Foot Locker, GameStop, Metro By T-Mobile, Panda Express, Rainbow, Sally Beauty Supply, Subway, T-Mobile and more. The mall also has a Goodwill Donation Trailer on site for customers who want to donate their unwanted items. The mall offers ample parking for customers and employees, with over 1,000 spaces available on site. There are also several bus stops nearby of Miami-Dade Transit. The mall is also close to major highways such as I-95 and US-11.
