Buckle - Bakersfield, California 93304 - Valley Plaza Mall

I had one of the worst experiences I've ever had in my life as a person of color at this store on December 23rd, 2019. I was completing some last minute christmas shopping and found the woman assisting me to be very helpful and customer service oriented. I purchased a belt, a shirt, and necklace for my wife that totaled a little over $100. I check out at the register and proceed to exit the store with the items i'd just purchased and the receipt in hand. As I exit, I see an associate assisting an elderly woman with ray-bans who'd stepped too far accidentally out of the store and activated the stores alarm simultaneously as I'm exiting. I overheard the associate tell her it is ok, and ask her to step back into the store. I continue to exit. As I walk through the mall, about 1 minute after my exit an African American male who identified himself as "Trelan" ran up behind me, out of breath, telling me that he is the manager and wished to check my bags. I explained to the gentleman that all my items were paid for and that I have the receipt. He ignored what I said and insists on checking my bag as he was under the impression that I'd activated the alarm. I let him look. After he looks I ask him if he found anything and he did not say anything. He laughed at me, and then walked away. As an elected official in Kern County, I am outraged at the notion that I would shoplift. Additionally, one might expect less professionalism from a sales associate, but not from the manager himself who is supposed to exemplify great customer service as the "tip of the spear" . I did not appreciate being racially profiled as the only person of color that was shopping in that store. Furthermore, if the transaction was a simple mix up, then the right thing to do would be to apologize. Which never happened. I even escalated the experience hoping to get some reciprocity by reporting it to corporate the same day. I still have yet to hear from ANYONE. I will never be going to this store again and would like to advise you all to spend your money somewhere that you will be treated with dignity. That place is certainly not the Buckle in Bakersfield, CA. Store #240.
