When founded in 1987 the Aéropostale brand was focused on teenagers and youngsters, later it became a clothing brand for everyone. The first Aéropostale store was opened in 1987 in New York, its name comes from the aviation company "Compagnie Generale Aéropostale" that operated first flights between France, LAtin America and Africa, it shows the adventure in Aéropostale fashion. In some countries the term "Aéropostale" stands for mail sent by avion.

Aéropostale biggest competitors on US market are Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle Outfitters. In 2016 it filled for bankruptcy and reopened its stores in 2017 under the new group of owners including Simon Property Group.
